REPRODUCTION
Pregnant & Nursing Dog Diet
Early pregnancy requires no changes. Late pregnancy and peak lactation can demand up to 3× normal energy intake. Here are the stage-by-stage feeding guidelines and the calcium supplementation warning you need to know.
Stage-by-Stage Nutritional Requirements
| Stage | Energy | Protein | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Early pregnancy (weeks 0–5) | Same as maintenance (RER × 1.8) | Adult maintenance level | Focus on weight maintenance — obesity increases whelping difficulty |
| Late pregnancy (weeks 6–9) | Gradually increase 1.5–2× | ≥22% DM | Rapid fetal growth — feed small frequent meals (stomach space reduced) |
| Lactation (post-whelping to weaning) | Up to 3–4× depending on litter size | ≥25% DM | Energy demand surges with large litters — free-choice feeding recommended |
| Post-weaning (puppies fully separated) | Gradually reduce | Transition to adult maintenance | Decrease food gradually as nursing ends to support mammary involution |
warningCalcium Supplements During Pregnancy — Dangerous
Excessive calcium during pregnancy chronically suppresses parathyroid hormone (PTH) secretion. When calcium drains rapidly out of the bloodstream during peak lactation, the suppressed PTH cannot respond fast enough — causing post-whelping hypocalcemia (eclampsia, milk fever), a life-threatening emergency requiring immediate IV calcium treatment.
An AAFCO-complete food for 'All Life Stages' already contains appropriate calcium. Do not add calcium supplements without explicit veterinary direction.
Food Selection Criteria
Confirm AAFCO 'All Life Stages' or 'pregnancy and lactation' statement
Foods labeled 'Adult Maintenance only' may not meet the elevated nutritional standards required during pregnancy and lactation.
Use puppy food for late pregnancy and lactation
Puppy food's higher energy density and protein level is well-suited to meeting the surging demands of late pregnancy and nursing. For large breeds, use a large-breed puppy formula (different Ca:P ratios).
Choose DHA-enriched food
Omega-3 DHA is essential for fetal brain and retinal development. Look for fish, fish oil, or a DHA-enriched label in the product.
Free-choice feeding during lactation
With 4+ puppies, energy needs often exceed what a scheduled feeding can provide. Free-choice feeding (always keeping the bowl full) or 3–4 unrestricted meals per day is recommended.

자주 묻는 질문
Q. Should I give calcium supplements during pregnancy?
No — and it can be dangerous. Excessive calcium during pregnancy chronically suppresses parathyroid hormone (PTH) secretion. When calcium rapidly exits the bloodstream during peak lactation, the suppressed PTH cannot respond quickly enough, causing post-whelping hypocalcemia (eclampsia/milk fever). This is a life-threatening emergency. A food labeled AAFCO-complete for 'All Life Stages' or 'pregnancy and lactation' already contains appropriate calcium — no supplementation needed.
Q. What food is best during pregnancy? Can I use puppy food?
A food with an AAFCO statement for 'All Life Stages (including growth and reproduction)' is appropriate. Puppy food is a valid choice — its higher energy density and protein content are well-suited to late pregnancy and lactation. For large breeds, use a large-breed puppy formula to ensure appropriate calcium-to-phosphorus ratios. Adult-maintenance-only foods may not meet the elevated nutritional requirements.
Q. The nursing mother is losing weight rapidly. What should I do?
This is common with large litters (6+ puppies). Switch to a high-energy-density puppy food and switch to free-choice feeding (always keep the bowl full). If weight loss continues, add high-energy wet puppy food alongside kibble. Excessive weight loss reduces immune function and milk production — both affect puppy health. Monitor the mother's body condition score (target BCS 4–5 out of 9) weekly.
Q. Should I give DHA supplements during pregnancy?
DHA is critical for fetal brain and retinal development. A DHA-enriched puppy or all-life-stages food typically provides sufficient amounts. If adding fish oil separately, a supplement providing ~30–50 mg DHA per kg body weight per day is appropriate. High-dose EPA+DHA can inhibit platelet function, so consult your vet before adding a separate supplement on top of an already DHA-rich diet.
Q. How much should I feed after whelping?
It depends on litter size. Per NRC (2006), add approximately 25% of the mother's maintenance energy requirement (MER) per puppy. Example: a mother with MER of 600 kcal/day nursing 5 puppies needs approximately 600 + (5 × 150) = 1,350 kcal/day. If free-choice feeding isn't feasible, split into 3–4 meals per day and monitor body weight and condition weekly.
